Description
Description
These parts are the MOTOR SHIMS (Item #9 in diagram). They come in a package of multiple thicknesses and have plenty to set up several motors.
All motors have built-in tolerances to allow for slight deviations during manufacturing. Shims are used to serve two main purposes:
- Prevent Rotor Movement: Excessive back-and-forth motion of the rotor inside the can during operation is undesirable, as each acceleration and deceleration can cause the rotor to shift, reducing power efficiency. However, a small amount of "play" is necessary, and I aim for a tolerance of around 0.040" or less.
- Center the Rotor in the Magnetic Field: The stator and rotor generate shaft power by working together within the magnetic field. Shims help position the rotor as close to the center of the fields as possible for optimal efficiency.
If you service the motor yourself and disassemble it for cleaning and bearing checks, make sure you put the shims back in the same place! The motor is sold properly shimmed and generally do not need changing. BUT if you change rotors, you may need to change shim thicknesses and number.
