2026 Mudboss Shootout 13.5 Motor Rule

Mark Fulton |

Up to December 23, 2025, the 13.5 TEX modified motor was approved for use. As I heard rumors about other manufacturers bringing their 'special' 13.5 motors, I wanted to make sure I had competitive 13.5 for this race. As shown below, I started with Scotty Ernst about the written rules. And after inquiring who was going to me the tech for the race (Trey Ford), I also contacted him so I could get the ruling on this motor. Below is the excerpt of the email to Scotty in late September 2025:

Scotty, I will do Gold at both events on the same corner (20 X 20) as last year. Thank you very much!

Thank you for updating my logo, it is applicable anywhere you put signage.

Looking forward to being there for both weeks.

I have reviewed the rules for the 13.5 motors at the event and first called and talked to Trey Ford to get a feel about what the rule says. Here is the text from dirtoval.com:

"13.5 Stock Classes:
Any Motor from the ROAR Approved Modified/13.5 Spec category and any ROAR approved 2S Hard Case LiPo battery are legal."

I am releasing a new motor edition in time for both events called the 'Talon'. I have two Talon 13.5 brushless motor models and both will be approved by ROAR prior to the event (one is approved and the other is waiting for my production parts to arrive so I can submit to ROAR).

I have a Modified 13.5 model and was just approved by ROAR last week.

I will also have a 13.5 ROAR Stock Spec motor also, just waiting for my parts to arrive to build and get ROAR approved.

My reading of the rules is both of my 13.5 motors are legal to be used at either event. The 'Modified 13.5' generates more torque due to the rotor, and may not be suitable for a green track. The 13.5 ROAR Stock Spec models may be the ticket in any place. We will know when we get there!

Please review with your team, I would like to be able to use either motor; I have about six team guys coming and what them to have a choice. Both motors will be available to the public (I think I will have both released and ROAR approved by first week in December).

I also captured the rule from dirtoval.com, read it by clicking HERE.
Late December 23, I received a call from Scotty (as well as email) telling me that ONLY 13.5 ROAR Stock Spec motors would be accepted for the race. I was dumbfounded a rule change was made about two weeks prior to the event! What really put my knickers in a wad was the actual text was changed at dirtoval.com and the Mudboss Shootout web site on December 24 which also said my 13.5 TEX motor was not for the race and only the ROAR Stock Spec would be allowed.
My two cents, but this last minute change caused many headaches for racers. I could have waited until race day and have then have a BIG blowout about the rules, but I wanted it decided before with no drama.
